Steel Toe vs Composite Toe: Which Should You Choose?

Both protect to the same 200-joule standard — but they behave very differently. Here's how to pick the right toe cap.

Steel Toe vs Composite Toe: Which Should You Choose?

Steel and composite toe caps both meet the same 200-joule impact standard, so the choice comes down to weight, temperature and environment.

Steel toe

Stronger against repeated impacts and slightly slimmer, steel caps cost less and suit heavy industry. The trade-off: they're heavier and conduct heat and cold, so they're less comfortable in extreme temperatures.

Composite toe

Made from carbon fibre, fibreglass or plastic, composite caps are up to 30% lighter, don't transfer heat or cold, and are non-metallic — so they won't set off metal detectors and are ideal for electrical and airport work.
